2021-283 MMHEALTH: MULTIMODAL HEALTH SENSING PLATFORM

SUMMARY:

UCLA researchers in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering have developed a system that can remotely evaluate patient symptoms and diagnose medical conditions.

BACKGROUND:

Ensuring that patients are accurately and efficiently diagnosed is of high clinical significance. Current methods require contact-based diagnostic tests that provide respiratory rate, blood-oxygen rate, temperature, and other metrics. While contact-based methods provide accurate and robust measurements, they require medical staff to come into contact with patients and expose potentially themselves to infectious diseases. Additionally, diagnostic tests are often time consuming and tedious for patients, which can lead to aversion. Therefore, there is a need for a contactless method that can safely and efficiently diagnose infectious diseases and other medical conditions.

INNOVATION:

UCLA researchers in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering have developed a contactless system that can remotely diagnose a variety of health conditions, including infectious diseases and sleep disorders. The developed system acquires data remotely and securely delivers diagnosis information to medical staff. The system uses a wide range of diagnostic techniques and complex neural networks to extract information from a patient. Furthermore, the system can screen patients for symptoms to model and identify infectious disease signatures.

ADVANTAGES:

  • Sleep disorder diagnosis
  • Infectious disease diagnosis
  • Patient screening
  • Security and defense

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS:

  • Contact-less diagnosis
  • Fast evaluation
  • Deep learning implementation
  • Rapid testing
  • Multimodal sensors
  • Detection of multiple symptoms
